Why I made this film

"Mystery of the Flower" is my love letter to my late uncle, Saad Saadi. Known to those close to him as an incredibly creative and an intensely private individual, Saadi led a quiet life devoted to the pursuit of knowledge and linguistic discoveries. Despite leaving behind a treasure trove of literary works in Arabic and Syriac, much of it remains unpublished.

To honor his legacy, I want to help the world recognize his genius through this short film, into which I’ve poured my heart and soul.

The Poet

Saad Saadi, born in 1953 in the small town of Derbasieh, Syria, was a gifted and imaginative writer and poet. Known for his profound creativity, he authored a groundbreaking book that traced the roots of the Mardini dialect of Arabic back to the ancient Syriac language, shedding light on the rich linguistic heritage of the region.

Saadi translated the Bible into the Mardini dialect - a version that is now been officially adopted by the church worldwide. Additionally, he published an encyclopedia of the Middle East, among other important publications.

Recently, a collection of his most extraordinary poems has been published, showcasing his philosophy and remarkable talent.

Saadi passed away in 2018 in the Netherlands, surrounded by family and loved ones, after a courageous battle with cancer. Throughout his life, Saadi was known for his kindness, gentleness, and humility. His legacy continues to resonate through his writings, offering a glimpse into the mind of a poet whose voice was as powerful as it was quiet.
